The cause of the massive sinkhole that shook Melbourne earlier this year has been revealed, and it's a story that raises some intriguing questions.
In a popular sporting area of Melbourne's northeast, AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg, an unexpected event unfolded. It occurred near a significant tunnel infrastructure project, leaving locals in awe and authorities scrambling.
Police and council workers quickly secured the area, as curious onlookers gathered to witness the aftermath. The sinkhole, measuring a staggering eight meters deep, had opened up due to a pressure test conducted by tunnel workers, according to official statements.
But here's where it gets controversial... Paul Roth, Interim CEO of VIDA Roads, a government entity overseeing projects like the North East Link, claimed the test "should not have taken place." He addressed the media, expressing deep disappointment and acknowledging the community's shared frustration.
"This was a serious incident, and we're taking full responsibility," Mr. Roth stated. "We could have prevented this."
However, he assured that the incident wouldn't impact the $26 billion tunnel project's timeline or budget.
According to reports, the workers encountered a geologically challenging and fragmented area. Mr. Roth defended the crew's actions, stating they were aware of the conditions and the tunnel boring machine (TBM) was functioning as expected.
"The crew navigated through the complex patch as planned and then conducted the pressure test," he explained. "It's this test that led to the sinkhole, and in hindsight, it shouldn't have happened."
And this is the part most people miss... The government has already begun repairs, filling the hole with concrete and re-turfing the affected area. They aim to complete the work by March.
