What a disgrace! The Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco turned into a chaotic spectacle, leaving fans and pundits alike stunned. The match, ultimately won by Senegal with a 1-0 victory in extra time, was overshadowed by controversial decisions and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The drama began with a penalty awarded to Morocco in the dying moments of normal time. Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the spot-kick, a chance to clinch the trophy for the hosts. But, after a lengthy delay of nearly 20 minutes, Senegal's goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, easily saved the weak attempt.
But here's where it gets controversial... The penalty award itself sparked outrage. The referee, Jean-Jacques Ndala, made the call after a VAR check, much to the fury of the Senegalese players and fans. This decision, however, was met with strong opposition from Senegal, whose players walked off the pitch in protest. Some fans reacted by throwing objects onto the field.
Former Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel called it a “shameful end” to the tournament.
The Senegal team had initially been riled by the referee’s decision to disallow for a foul a goal they scored in the second added minute when Abdoulaye Seck headed off the post at a corner and Ismaila Sarr nodded in the rebound.
After Diaz’s penalty miss, however, it felt almost inevitable that a galvanised Senegal would go on to score, and they did so in the fourth minute of extra time to stun the home fans in the crowd of 66,526 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The winning goal came from Pape Gueye, who struck a superb shot into the top corner, sending the Senegalese fans into raptures. Morocco, however, were left heartbroken, especially Diaz, who was promptly substituted.
This match was low on goalmouth action -- not exactly surprising given the defensive strength of Africa’s best teams according to the FIFA rankings.
It is Senegal's second Cup of Nations title in the last three editions.
Any investigation into the disgraceful scenes during the game will focus on the conduct of the Senegal team and their fans as well as any shortcomings by Moroccan organisers.
