Pakistan Cricket Board Unveils Revolutionary Changes in PSL Structure
The Pakistan Cricket Board has unveiled a groundbreaking transformation in the Pakistan Super League, introducing a player auction system to replace the draft system that has been in place since the league's inception in 2016. This move marks a significant shift in the PSL's operational model.
The total purse for the franchise has been increased to USD 1.6 million, a substantial rise from the previous USD 1.3 million, reflecting the league's commitment to player welfare and competitive balance. PSL CEO Salman Naseer emphasized the potential of these reforms to enhance the league's growth, competitiveness, and innovation.
"The PSL is evolving from a draft-based system to a player auction, which will bring increased transparency and a more balanced competitive environment for the teams," Naseer explained. "This transition will also provide players with greater earning potential and opportunities."
The new regulations introduce a more streamlined approach to player retention, allowing each franchise to retain a maximum of four players, with a limit of one player per category. This contrasts with the previous policy, which permitted franchises to retain eight players, including a mentor, brand ambassador, and a right to match option, allowing for a ninth player retention in the draft.
The board has also abolished the roles of mentor, brand ambassador, and right to match, simplifying the franchise's operational structure. Naseer further clarified that the new teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot, will have the opportunity to select four players from the available pool before the auction.
Additionally, each franchise will be permitted one direct signing of a foreign player who did not participate in PSL 10, enabling teams to strategically bolster their squads with fresh international talent. These changes are set to revolutionize the PSL, fostering a more competitive and dynamic environment for cricket enthusiasts across Pakistan and beyond.
